Before you go live

Read the checklist, then close this window to begin your registration. These essentials must be completed before you start selling.

Register your food business Register free with the council for your kitchen address at least 28 days before trading—for example Hackney, Lambeth or Waltham Forest. Register here. Prepare your kitchen for inspection Your council may inspect hygiene, cleaning, storage, temperature control, cross-contamination and pest prevention. Set up food safety procedures Keep a simple HACCP-based system, such as the FSA’s Safer Food, Better Business pack. Have suitable food hygiene training A Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene certificate is strongly recommended for Home Chefs. List ingredients and allergens Identify the 14 regulated allergens in every dish and provide this information before purchase. Check permissions and insurance Check with your landlord, mortgage provider and home insurer. Arrange appropriate public and product liability cover. Set up your business and tax records Choose your business structure, register with HMRC where required and keep records of sales, costs and suppliers. Plan safe collection or delivery Use food-safe packaging and keep food protected and at the correct temperature until handover.
